Want to learn how to score like the Memphis Grizzlies Ja Morant? Here are some drills and exercises that can get you to your goal.
Ja Morant was incredible in the 2022 NBA playoffs.
It was the young guard’s second post-season appearance. But the lack of experience didn’t show in his performance.
In the first round, Morant and his team, the Memphis Grizzlies, took on another young team, the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Morant wasn’t the most efficient player this series -when you compare his stats to the regular season and the second round, which I’ll talk about later- but still put up impressive numbers.
He averaged 21.5 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 10.5 assists, leading the Grizzlies to defeat the Timberwolves in six games.
He played well. However, he played even better in the next round.
Morant for whatever reason switched gears in the semi-finals and he exploded. Maybe it was him winning the Most Improved Player of the Year. Or maybe it was because he was facing off against a dynasty -the Golden State Warriors.
Regardless of the reason, Ja took it to a new level.
He was more energetic and limber, bouncier, and more locked in.
But even though he played great in all of the games, there was one game that stood out.
In Game 2 of the series, he went full Super Saiyan and scored a career-high 47 points. He also dished out 8 assists and grabbed 8 rebounds.
You can witness his handiwork here:
Morant was key for the Grizzlies and led the series in points, but unfortunately, was only able to play three games due to an injury.
He ended the series averaging 38.3 points on 51 percent shooting, 6.7 rebounds, and 8.3 assists.
The Warriors went on to beat the Grizzlies in six games, but if Ja hadn’t gotten injured, the outcome might’ve been different.
How Did Ja Morant Average So Many Points?
In the semi-finals against the Warriors, Ja was shooting and making more 3-pointers than normal, which boosted his points per game.
But the bulk of his points still came from him ruthlessly attacking the basket.
How to Score Like Ja Morant
Ja’s 3-point shooting has improved, but his bread and butter are layups.
He can do so many different types that he has the perfect layup package in 2K.
So, if you want to make layups like him, you have to learn how to do as many types of layups as possible.
The best drill to attain that skill is the Iverson Layup Drill, which you can learn how to do here.
This drill is great for practicing layups because it forces you to do different types from different angles around the rim.
Another thing you have to do is develop your vertical.
By being able to jump higher, not only will you be able to make layups easier, but you’ll also be able to adjust your layup mid-air to counter the defense.
To increase your vertical, do these three exercises (you click on the exercise to learn how to do them):
You can also sprinkle in some 3-point training as well to diversify your offensive game.
The best drill for it, I think, is the Brad Stevens Shooting Drill. This drill will help you get streaky and will also help you maintain good shooting form when you are tired.
Final Thoughts
