Angel Reese holds the record for most consecutive double-doubles.
Recording your first double-double is one of the most special things a basketball player can do.
But going on a double-double streak and breaking a league record with the streak as a rookie is remarkable.
And on July 7, 2024, the Chicago Sky’s top rookie, Angel Reese, broke the record for most consecutive double-double games with 13 in a row.
Reese surpassed WNBA (and Sky) legend Candace Parker, who set the record at 12 in the 2009 and 2010 seasons.
When Reese Broke The Record
She set the record in a game against the Seattle Storm.
Reese was having a field day against her opponents as she nearly secured her double-double in the first half alone with 9 points and 8 rebounds, while helping the Sky lead the game 39-31.
But basketball is a game of runs and the Storm promptly went on a run in the second half.
However, this wasn’t a bad thing.
It forced Reese to continue attacking and in the second half, she added another 8 points and 6 rebounds to her stat sheet for a total of 17 points and 14 rebounds in 40 minutes of playtime.
The rookie grabbed her 10th rebound with 7:49 remaining in the third quarter and reached double-figures in points after putting back a missed layup by her teammate, Kamilla Cardoso, at the 6:29 mark.
It was a momentous day for her. Sadly, the Storm spoiled it by winning the game 84-71.
“I try to take some things from her game and add them to mine,” Reese said after the game. “Just being able to be named with an amazing player like that is just always going to be special to me.”
Reese Continued Streak, Almost Stretched It To 16
After this game, Reese continued to extend her streak.
She recorded more double-doubles in the following 3 games, stretching her double-double games to 15 in a row.
She was about to record her 16th, but her opponents that night, the New York Liberty, did all they could to prevent this from happening.
With a few seconds left in this game, Reese called for the ball in the post and as she received the pass, four of New York’s players swarmed her to prevent her from getting her tenth point.
She got rid of the ball and tried to get it back with less than ten seconds left in the game, but her teammate, despite the crowd’s roaring, decided to run the clock out instead.
After the game, Reese told the media that although holding the record is awesome, helping the Sky, who won 2 out of their last 5 games, win is more important to her.
“[Winning] is what’s most important to me,” Reese said about the streak on Thursday. “I think I’ve done a great job, being able to be consistent and I’ve broken the record already. So [I want to] be able to just be me and do whatever my teammates need.”
Conclusion
And that’s the legend of Angel Reese, who led the WNBA in consecutive double-doubles with 15 in a row.
